Typically, 29 is enjoyed by four players, split into fixed partnerships with partners sitting across from each other. The game uses 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck, featuring eight cards per suit in the familiar "French" suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The card rankings in each suit go from high to low: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective? To capture tricks that contain high-value cards.

Here’s how the cards stack up in terms of points:

• Jacks: 3 points each
• Nines: 2 points each
• Aces: 1 point each
• Tens: 1 point each
• Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): no points

This adds up to a total of 28 points from the cards. In certain versions, an additional point is awarded for winning the last trick, bringing the total to 29, which is how the game gets its name. Nowadays, many players opt not to count the last trick’s point, yet the game retains its iconic name.

Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives, which are removed from the deck, serve as trump indicators. Each player holds one card of each suit from this set. Meanwhile, the Sixes are used to keep score, with each partnership employing one red and one black Six.
