11 Bit Studios, the renowned Polish developer, has unveiled a new trailer for their eagerly awaited sci-fi adventure, The Alters, which is drawing ever closer to its release date. Amidst the excitement, the studio took a moment to reminisce about one of their most celebrated projects, the wartime survival game This War of Mine, which catapulted them to global recognition more than a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is renowned for its stark and somber atmosphere, The Alters ventures into a more spirited and frequently humorous narrative, focusing on the challenges faced by alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite these narrative shifts, the developers highlight a deep thematic connection between the two games.
Though This War of Mine and The Alters diverge significantly in their settings and tones, both games center around the core theme of survival. In This War of Mine, players are thrust into the brutal realities of surviving in a war-torn city, managing scarce resources and facing daily challenges to keep their group of civilians alive. Conversely, The Alters frames survival as a frantic race against time, where players must continuously maneuver their mobile base to escape an unrelenting sun that obliterates everything in its path.
Both titles challenge players to step out of their comfort zones and explore hostile environments in pursuit of vital resources. The main distinction lies in the protagonists: This War of Mine tasks players with guiding a group of ordinary civilians, whereas The Alters introduces a unique team made up of alternate versions of the main character, Jan Dolski.
The Alters is scheduled for release in 2025, and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Excitingly, the game will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass from launch day, ensuring a wide audience can experience this innovative survival adventure.
