While This War of Mine is renowned for its stark and somber atmosphere, The Alters ventures into a more spirited and frequently humorous narrative, focusing on the challenges faced by alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite these narrative shifts, the developers highlight a deep thematic connection between the two games.

Though This War of Mine and The Alters diverge significantly in their settings and tones, both games center around the core theme of survival. In This War of Mine, players are thrust into the brutal realities of surviving in a war-torn city, managing scarce resources and facing daily challenges to keep their group of civilians alive.
