The final major patch for Baldur's Gate 3 has been eagerly anticipated by fans, and now we have a release date. This update will introduce new features and content that players have been requesting. Let's dive into what to expect from this last patch and what the future holds for the franchise.
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) fans, mark your calendars! The long-awaited final major update, Patch 8, is set to launch on April 15. Larian Studios made the announcement via a Twitter (X) post on April 11, and to add to the excitement, Senior Systems Designer Ross Stephens will be hosting a Twitch Stream to discuss the new content. The stream is scheduled for April 16 at 1:00 UTC on the Larian Studios Twitch page. Check the timetable below to find out when the stream starts in your region:
Larian Studios first hinted at this update in a November 2024 Steam blog post, teasing fans with details about upcoming content. Patch 8 will introduce 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, and much more. Although it's the last major patch, Larian Studios remains committed to supporting the modding community, with plans to enhance functionality so players can craft their own stories.
The patch promises a range of new additions, including abilities, animations, VFX, summons, cantrips, and unique voiced dialogue lines for the Oathbreaker Knight. There will also be written reactivity for Oathbreakers and some homebrewing on actions to enrich the role-playing experience.
Additionally, the much-anticipated Photo Mode will allow players to capture unique snapshots of their characters with a variety of options, including camera settings, lens settings, scene settings, post-processing effects, frames, and stickers.
After Patch 8, Larian Studios will depart from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to focus on new projects. At the 2024 Game Developers Conference, Founder and CEO Swen Vicke confirmed that the studio will not be developing any DLC or expansions for Baldur's Gate, nor will they be creating a Baldur's Gate 4. Vicke stated, "Baldur's Gate will always have a warm spot in our heart. We'll forever be proud of it, but we're not gonna continue in it. We're not gonna make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We're not gonna make Baldur's Gate 4, which everyone is expecting us to do. We're gonna move on - we're gonna move away from D&D and start making a new thing."
Despite Larian Studios' departure, the future of the Baldur's Gate series remains bright. In April 2024, Eugene Evans, Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Licensing at Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, told PC Gamer that they are actively discussing the franchise's future with various partners. Evans emphasized their commitment to the series, saying, "So we certainly hope that it's not another 25 years, as it was from Baldur's Gate 2 to 3, before we answer that. But we're going to take our time and find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur’s Gate. We take that very, very seriously, as we do with all of our decisions around our portfolio. We don't rush into decisions as to who to partner with on products or what products we should be considering."
While Larian Studios moves on from the Baldur’s Gate franchise, fans can rest assured that the series will continue. Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay updated with the latest news by checking out our article below!
