Today in the realm of peculiar news, former Oscars host Conan O'Brien disclosed that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rejected his creative promotional ideas for the ceremony. Specifically, the Academy was staunchly against allowing the Oscar statue to be clothed or positioned horizontally in the ads O'Brien and his team had proposed.
During an episode of the podcast "Conan Needs a Friend" hosted by his Oscars head writer Mike Sweeney, O'Brien described his vision: a series of advertisements showcasing a domestic partnership between him and a towering 9-foot Oscar statue. However, the Academy was not amused by the proposed usage of the statue.

O'Brien shared one of his concepts, which involved a scenario where he would be seen vacuuming while the Oscar statue lounged on a large couch. He humorously suggested lines like, "Could you at least lift your feet? Or could you at least get up and help? Load the dishwasher?" Despite the playful and innocuous nature of the idea, the Academy firmly declined.
The reasons behind the Academy's refusal are rooted in their strict rules regarding the Oscar statue's portrayal. O'Brien recounted a surprising directive from the Academy: "Oscar can never be horizontal." He likened the statue to a sacred relic, saying, "Like, wow, this is like the thigh bone of St. Peter. This is a religious icon." Additionally, the Academy insisted that the statue remain "always naked," thwarting another of O'Brien's ideas where the Oscar would serve him leftovers while dressed as an apron-wearing housewife.

While the Academy's rules may seem arbitrary to outsiders, they have the authority to enforce them. It's a shame that fans missed out on witnessing O'Brien's comedic talents in these proposed ads. Looking forward, there's hope that O'Brien will return with equally entertaining ideas for future ceremonies. Here's to rooting for Conan O'Brien as the Oscars host in 2026.
