FromSoftware has recently unveiled more details about their upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods, showcasing a unique partnership with Nintendo that's influencing both the game's style and character design. The trailer revealed during the Switch 2 Direct concluded with a captivating image of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, sparking curiosity among fans about this intriguing character.

This winged rat, as it turns out, serves as the hub companion in The Duskbloods, akin to the fire keepers in the Dark Souls series. In an interview with Nintendo, director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance." He further elaborated on the design choice, saying, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership. We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."

FromSoftware's shrine keepers have traditionally been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds, with iconic figures like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll. In The Duskbloods, a PvPvE game, the winged rat's role in providing advice and guidance remains to be fully explored. Miyazaki hinted at the game's innovative approach, stating that the team at FromSoft has introduced "a lot of new and interesting ideas," promising an unexpected experience when The Duskbloods launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
