Dynasty Warriors 10 Was Canceled

Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Canceled Predecessor

The upcoming release of Dynasty Warriors: Origins on January 17, 2025, marks a significant moment for the franchise, born from the ashes of a cancelled project. Omega Force, the developers, initially embarked on creating the 10th mainline installment in the Dynasty Warriors series. However, technological advancements spurred a strategic shift.

The decision to scrap Dynasty Warriors 10 stemmed from the team's experience with the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles. Witnessing the potential of modern hardware, they opted for a complete redesign, resulting in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. While painful, abandoning the prior project allowed for a more modern and strategically rich gameplay experience.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins retains the series' hallmark hack-and-slash combat, set against the backdrop of China's Three Kingdoms Era. Players assume the role of an amnesiac protagonist, interacting with iconic historical figures. Deluxe Edition players have already experienced the fast-paced action.

The cancelled Dynasty Warriors 10, described as a "phantom number title," would have resembled Dynasty Warriors 7 (2011) in its stage-clearing structure. However, producer Tomohiko Sho emphasized that the technological leap facilitated a departure from this formula. Key elements from the abandoned project, such as the free-roaming map and a more in-depth exploration of the Three Kingdoms narrative, found their way into Origins. Producer Masamichi Oba highlighted the difficult but ultimately rewarding process of integrating these features into the final product. The result is a game that leverages modern technology to deliver a refined and enhanced Dynasty Warriors experience.
