Exclusive: 'Ninja Gaiden 4' Unveiled in Xbox Surprise Reveal

The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a thrilling surprise: the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4 and a remastered Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja."

This marks the return of the mainline Ninja Gaiden series after a 13-year hiatus, with Ninja Gaiden 4 serving as a direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3. Developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, the game promises the series' signature blend of brutally challenging yet rewarding gameplay.

A New Protagonist Takes Center Stage

Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to become a Master Ninja. PlatinumGames' Art Director, Tomoko Nishii, described Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the series' iconic protagonist.

While Yakumo is the main focus, Ryu Hayabusa remains a significant figure, serving as both a formidable opponent and a crucial element in Yakumo's journey. Ryu will also be playable.

Revamped Combat System

The game retains the series' signature fast-paced, brutal combat, adding a new fighting style for Yakumo: the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style, alongside the Raven Style. Team Ninja's Director, Masazaku Hirayama, assures fans that while distinct, both styles maintain the core Ninja Gaiden feel. PlatinumGames' input promises a heightened sense of speed and dynamism.

Release Date and Availability

Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for release in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remastered Classic

Simultaneously released is Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 title, available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and included with Xbox Game Pass. This version adds playable characters Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel, enhancing the experience for both veterans and newcomers.
