Sony and the acclaimed game developer Santa Monica Studio have unveiled the Dark Odyssey collection, an exciting new update for God of War Ragnarök slated for release next week. This update introduces a stunning array of in-game equipment inspired by one of the franchise's most iconic outfits.
In a detailed post on the PlayStation.Blog, Sony outlined its comprehensive plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the God of War series. The highlight of these celebrations is undoubtedly the Dark Odyssey collection, which will be available as a free update for all God of War Ragnarök players on PlayStation 5 and PC starting March 20.
The Dark Odyssey collection boasts a sleek black-and-gold aesthetic, designed to enhance the visual appeal of Kratos and his companions as they navigate the realms of Norse mythology. Both Atreus and Freya will receive their own unique cosmetic sets, alongside various new looks for the player's shields and weapons.
The centerpiece of the Dark Odyssey update is a special appearance and armor set for Kratos, reminiscent of a legendary skin from God of War 2 that was previously exclusive to players who conquered the game on God Mode difficulty. This coveted content can be unlocked from any Lost Items chest in the base game or directly within the roguelike Valhalla mode of God of War Ragnarök post-update. Additionally, the update will introduce the much-requested feature of customizing Kratos’ weapon appearances without impacting their abilities.

Given that God of War Ragnarök launched in late 2022, a single update alone couldn't encapsulate the series' rich 20-year history. Sony has planned a multitude of activities and offers to commemorate this milestone, including downloadable social media assets available here, an art showcase in collaboration with Los Angeles’ Gallery Nucleus, new merchandise, special sales, and multiple vinyl releases chronicling the franchise’s journey.
Santa Monica Studio expressed their gratitude, stating, "On behalf of everyone at Santa Monica Studio, we are immeasurably grateful to have had the chance to build the legacy of this series with and for you, the fans of God of War."
For those eager to delve deeper into the God of War 20th anniversary celebrations, you can look forward to an upcoming PlayStation symphony world tour starting next month. Additionally, explore why we believe the next installment in the God of War series should be as innovative as its predecessors.
