Kojima to Assess Initial OD Feedback, Seeks Lasting Impact

With Death Stranding 2: On the Beach now complete, Hideo Kojima is focusing on the Xbox-published OD, a project he once called "a game I have always wanted to make."

In a discussion with Ssense, Kojima looked back on the development and reception of Death Stranding 2 while offering a brief glimpse at what comes next, including the mysterious OD.

If you're looking for solid details, prepare for disappointment—Kojima remains characteristically tight-lipped about the new title. Still, he described it as "something totally different… people will love it or hate it."

Notably, Kojima appeared unfazed by potential backlash. Acknowledging that he'll likely see fan discussions online and watch video essays analyzing his work, he believes "the real evaluations come after—10 or 20 years from now."

Kojima first announced OD at The Game Awards 2023, taking the stage to call it something “no one has seen before.”

“It is a game, don’t get me wrong, but it’s at the same time a movie and at the same time a new form of media," he remarked at the event.

The footage highlighted actors such as Sophia Lillis (It, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), and Udo Kier (Hunters, Swan Song).

Just as the audience began to grasp what OD might be, director Jordan Peele (Nope, Get Out) joined Kojima on stage, expressing his admiration for Metal Gear Solid 2 and confirming his collaboration on OD.

“He's been an inspiration to me, and the opportunity to collaborate with him is truly incredible," Peele stated. "In my films, I aim to immerse viewers in the protagonist’s world—Hideo masters this like no one else. What he’s developing is deeply immersive, truly frightening, and I'm honored to work with the GOAT. Let’s go.”

Kojima didn’t specify Peele’s exact role in OD but teased that more well-known figures are involved, though their identities remain under wraps:

“What I can say is it’s not just Jordan. I have other creative partners working with me—legends in their fields, truly amazing talents I can’t name just yet.”

As for when we’ll see more of OD, keep in mind that Kojima confirmed in January that the video game actors strike impacted its production, along with his upcoming Sony action espionage game.

In a tweet, Kojima explained that his studio had to halt performance capture and filming for OD during the second half of 2024, after the SAG-AFTRA video game actors' strike started in July.

Casting for Physint, Kojima’s eagerly awaited return to the action-espionage genre, was also paused due to the strike. Kojima added that he expects to resume production in 2025. Announced during a Sony State of Play, Physint may be destined for PlayStation 6.

Though Kojima created the iconic Metal Gear stealth series, he admitted in the same interview that he doesn’t plan to play Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater—the remake of MGS3.
