It wouldn't be a Nintendo console without a Zelda game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is no exception, though it comes in a form we weren't anticipating. During today's Nintendo Direct, we learned that Koei Tecmo is developing a new Hyrule Warriors game: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, set to release this winter.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is the latest installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, featuring characters from the ancient history sections of Tears of the Kingdom. This includes familiar faces like Zelda, as well as Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. The game explores Zelda's journey after she travels back in time, where she allies with the last Zonai, Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to battle against Ganondorf and his forces.4 Images
The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, including Mineru piloting a mech, Zelda wielding her magic, Rauru with his impressive sword-spear, and brief appearances of other Sacred Stone wielders.
This marks the third entry in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity was particularly notable for its fresh take on the Breath of the Wild story. With a 9/10 rating, we praised it as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish."
