Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Original Character Returns
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has ignited excitement among fans by suggesting the possibility of a comeback for the beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that their return in a future game is "always a possibility," particularly given the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
This remastered collection, featuring six classic titles including Marvel vs. Capcom 2, will reintroduce Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon to a new generation of players. These characters, originally introduced in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, have been largely absent from recent installments, making their potential return highly anticipated.
Matsumoto emphasized that the collection's release provides a perfect opportunity to reignite interest in these characters. He even hinted at the possibility of their inclusion in titles outside the Versus series, such as Street Fighter 6, depending on fan response. "If there are enough people who are interested in these characters, then who knows? Maybe there is a chance they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game," he stated.
The producer also revealed that Capcom's plans for a new Versus title and the re-release of other legacy fighting games are dependent on fan engagement and successful collaborations with external partners. The team's desire to bring these classic titles to modern platforms with updated features like rollback netcode is clear, but the process requires time and coordination.
Matsumoto concluded by highlighting the importance of re-releasing classic titles to energize the community and gauge interest for future projects. The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection serves as a crucial step in this process, potentially paving the way for the return of beloved characters and the creation of new Versus experiences.
