On January 11, 2025, users on Reddit, Resetera, and other online forums began reporting that Amazon was canceling their Metroid Prime 4 pre-orders.

According to screenshots shared by users, Amazon contacted them to cancel their pre-orders "due to a lack of availability." Despite the disappointing news, Amazon assured customers that refunds for reservation charges would be processed within 1-2 business days.

Some longtime Metroid fans are upset, as many placed their pre-orders back when the game was first announced at E3 2017. It’s important to note that the cancellation does not imply the game has been canceled—only that it’s no longer available for pre-order on Amazon.

Metroid Prime 4 was first revealed during E3 2017. At the time, Nintendo's director of product marketing confirmed that Retro Studios, the developer behind previous Metroid Prime titles, was not involved. Nintendo did not initially disclose which studio was handling the new installment.

Two years after the initial announcement, Nintendo revealed that development had been restarted under Retro Studios. In a YouTube video published on January 25, 2019, senior managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi explained that "the current development progress has not reached the standards we seek in a sequel to the Metroid Prime series."

In June 2024, Nintendo showcased a full gameplay trailer for Metroid Prime 4 at the end of its Nintendo Direct presentation, confirming a 2025 release window and the official subtitle: Beyond. The trailer also introduced the game’s primary antagonist, Sylux, who is seen leading a group of Space Pirates inside an unidentified facility.

More recently, Nintendo reaffirmed the 2025 release window for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in a news post dated January 3, 2025. Although Amazon's cancellation of pre-orders has raised concerns among fans, this official statement confirms the game is still on track for a release this year.

With the official reveal of the Switch 2 approaching, it remains to be seen whether Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will launch on the original Switch or its successor.
