One of the most delightful aspects of managing a farm in *Stardew Valley* is the array of animals you can have roaming your land, from livestock to adorable pets. A new feature introduced in the 1.6 update in early 2024 allows players to adopt multiple pets, enhancing the farm life experience even further. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to unlock and care for multiple pets on your farm.

When you begin your journey in Stardew Valley, you can adopt either a cat or a dog as your first pet. However, with the introduction of the 1.6 update, you can now expand your furry family. To unlock the ability to adopt multiple pets, you must first maximize your friendship level with your current pet.
Start by ensuring your pet has a full bowl of water every day, using your Watering Can. On rainy or snowy days, the bowl will fill automatically, so you can take a break. Additionally, pet your animal once a day to see a heart bubble appear over their head, indicating your affection. You can monitor your pet's friendship level in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.
Once the friendship meter is completely filled, Marnie will send you a notice in the mail about the opportunity to adopt more pets. If you haven't adopted a pet by the end of your first year, Marnie will send you this notice at the start of Year 2.

Upon receiving Marnie's notice, head to her shop south of your farm during her regular hours from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). At the counter, select the "Adopt Pets" option to view a list of available Pet Licenses. You can choose from 12 different licenses, including five variations of dogs and cats, and two types of turtles. Be prepared to spend a moderate sum of money on each license.
The full list of Pet Licenses and their costs is as follows:

After choosing your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls. These bowls are essential for maintaining your pets' friendship level, serving as their "home" on the farm. Neglecting to provide water can lead to your pets running away, which would be a heartbreaking loss of both companionship and investment.
Pet Bowls are available under the "Construct Farm Buildings" menu at Robin's shop, costing 5,000g and requiring 25 x Hardwood (obtained with a Copper Axe or better). It's advisable to build these bowls before adopting new pets to ensure you don't lose any friendship points.

For additional pet amenities, you can visit Marnie's Ranch to purchase decorative items like Doghouses (for outdoor use) and Cat Trees (for indoor use). While these items add charm to your farm, they do not affect your pets' friendship meters.
With these steps, you're now equipped to bring more joy and companionship to your Stardew Valley farm by adopting multiple pets. For more insights and guides on Stardew Valley, including selecting the best farm type, be sure to visit The Escapist.
