Nintendo Store Limits Switch 2 Preorders to Curb Scalping

The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to hit the market on June 5, 2025, and it's expected to be a hot commodity upon release. To ensure that genuine fans of the console get first dibs, Nintendo is implementing a strategic pre-order system through the My Nintendo Store. By registering their interest, those with a Nintendo Account can secure an opportunity to pre-order the Nintendo Switch 2 system along with "select accessories."

Once registered, customers will receive an invitation email to finalize their pre-order, but there's a twist. The invitation system prioritizes those who have demonstrated loyalty to the Nintendo ecosystem. According to the fine print on the site, "Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025." These invitations are non-transferable and linked to the email associated with the Nintendo Account. Additionally, there's a one-per-account limit for both the system and each accessory during the invitation period. Customers can choose between a base Nintendo Switch 2 system or one bundled with Mario Kart World.

After placing an order, customers will receive an approximate shipping date, though Nintendo clarifies that "release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times." These measures are designed to ensure that the Nintendo Switch 2 goes to dedicated gamers rather than scalpers looking to resell the console online.

Scalping has been a significant issue for high-demand product launches, as seen with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Valve managed to mitigate this with the Steam Deck by implementing a queue system linked to Steam accounts and checking account creation dates. Nintendo's approach with the My Nintendo Store follows a similar vein, aiming to prioritize long-time fans.

While there will be other avenues to purchase the Nintendo Switch 2, this pre-order system offers a chance for dedicated Switch 1 owners to secure their new console amidst the potential frenzy of a launch day.
