If you're an avid gamer, you're probably familiar with the frustration of playing vertical arcade games on your phone. It often feels awkward and less than ideal. Enter Max Kern, a modder who has devised an innovative solution: the Tate Mode mini controller. This device aims to address the long-standing challenge of enjoying portrait-mode games comfortably. But does it truly resolve the issue?
Traditional controllers are designed for landscape mode, much like those used with the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck. However, many classic vertical shooters and retro games are best enjoyed in portrait orientation, akin to scrolling through your Instagram feed.
Max Kern's solution is a compact USB-C gamepad specifically crafted for portrait-mode gaming, also known as Tate mode. This controller connects directly to your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or extra batteries.
The Tate Mode mini controller is powered by a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip. Max 3D-printed the case and buttons using JLCPCB, and he's generously shared a tutorial on his YouTube channel, allowing enthusiasts to replicate the project themselves.
The controller utilizes the GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac devices. Its versatility is impressive, considering its small size.
However, there's a potential downside. The setup may strain the USB-C port due to the controller bearing some of the phone's weight. This means you'll need to support both the phone and the controller while playing, as there's a risk of damaging the connector over time.
On Reddit, opinions are mixed. Some users admire the ingenuity but worry about potential hand cramps and discomfort, while others are more open to this innovative DIY project.
It's worth noting that this isn't a commercial product but rather a DIY endeavor. Max has made all the firmware and print files available on Thingiverse and GitHub. What do you think about this tiny gamepad? Share your thoughts in the comments!
