Smash Together, an unofficial dating app designed to connect Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts, reported receiving a cease-and-desist notice just prior to its planned open beta launch.
The app was scheduled to begin open beta testing on May 15 following months of development. However, on May 13, its official account shared a melancholy Yoshi meme captioned: "We got cease and desisted." (Credit to Automaton for spotting this.)

While the developers didn't identify the sender of the legal notice, Nintendo remains the most likely candidate given the app's direct association with Super Smash Bros.
Promoted as "the premier dating platform for Super Smash Bros. fans," SmashTogether claimed its matchmaking algorithm could help users find their "perfect Doubles partner (both in-game and beyond)" by connecting players with compatible rivals.
App screenshots revealed features allowing users to showcase their preferred fighter ("main"), tournament achievements, and Smash Bros.-themed profile prompts like: "Seeking someone who can survive the pools at majors."
The legal action likely stemmed from both potential IP violations and the very concept of a dating service built around Smash Bros. gameplay.
As of now, SmashTogether's team hasn't indicated whether they'll attempt to relaunch without the Smash Bros. branding. Credit the writer's professionalism for resisting the obvious puns about "smashing" throughout this report.
