Launching September 26, Marvel’s Spider-Man will mark Magic’s second fully draftable, Standard-legal Universes Beyond set after Final Fantasy, and the third overall following 2023’s Modern-legal Lord of the Rings release. Unlike expected, it won’t include preconstructed Commander decks—the Scene Box cards showcased here won’t be Standard-legal, as they’re tailored for Commander gameplay.
While last year’s Wolverine and Captain America Secret Lair introduced Magic to the Marvel universe, Spider-Man breaks new ground as the first full set inspired by the comics. According to Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall, a smaller product simply couldn’t accommodate Spidey’s expansive roster of allies and adversaries.
"Spider-Man deserves a full set to truly honor his legacy..."
“A full set was essential to capture Spider-Man’s essence and iconic villains,” McCall explains. “Squeezing his universe into a broader Marvel set would’ve forced impossible cuts. Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales might’ve made the cut elsewhere, but characters like Aunt May would’ve been left behind.”
McCall notes that Universes Beyond sets invert traditional worldbuilding: “With Spider-Man, players already know the story. Cards like ‘With Great Power’ can embrace deeper mechanics because fans instantly recognize their themes. We’re free to focus on iconic moments rather than oversimplifying design.”
On translating Spider-Man’s world into Magic mechanics, Head Designer Mark Rosewater confirms the color pie’s versatility: “Heroism and villainy thrive across all five colors.” Spider-Man himself embodies white (responsibility), blue (scientific intellect), and green (animalistic destiny)—though his Scene Box iteration focuses on just white and blue.
“Peter Parker’s duty to protect others anchors him in white. His radioactive origin and web-slinging tech scream blue. The spider symbolism—and themes of destiny—root him in green too,” Rosewater elaborates.
"We drew inspiration from the entire Spider-Man mythos."
Beyond the Scene Box, expect Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs (detailed in the gallery). Though preconstructed Commander decks are absent, Welcome Decks return—free introductory decks designed to ease new players into gameplay.
Following this year’s Final Fantasy crossover, Wizards of the Coast has announced sets for Avatar: The Last Airbender, Tarkir: Dragontstorm, and the cosmic Edge of Eternities.
