These five cards form what's known as a "cycle," unified by a common design theme spread across each of Magic's colors. They're all cost-effective, common-rarity creatures with abilities linked to one of Tarkir’s three-color clans, and another feature that converts mana into a color from that clan.

Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak explains, “Three-color limited environments require ample mana fixing at all rarities. Our goal was to ensure many decks could access mana fixing, so we developed numerous designs to address this. These creatures are unique in that they allow you to build your board presence while simultaneously developing your mana - unlike tapped lands that only provide mana and can cause you to fall behind in the game.”

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond highlights that while the mechanical design led the way with this cycle, common cards often serve as a canvas to paint the world of a set. She elaborates, "These cards showcase the distinct evolution of the clans since their last appearance. From the action-oriented Jeskai monks, the Temur's Whisper magic, the Sultai's Nagas as guardians of the jungle, the Mardu's military prowess showcasing varied roles and dragon forms, to the Abzan clerics nurturing the lost kin trees."

One critique leveled at some recent Magic sets has been their dependence on familiar tropes or thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting known planes. However, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out with its direct approach to revisiting Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast, stating, "Our top-level pitch for Tarkir was set long before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and the subsequent sets, and it remained unchanged. We aimed to blend Dragons and Clans in a novel way for Tarkir, with Dragonstorms playing a pivotal role in our design. The challenge to capture the essence of this beloved plane authentically was a constant pressure from the start."

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, with a planned release in both physical and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will commence on April 4.
