CD Projekt Red, the game's developer, has officially announced that The Witcher 4 will not see the light of day in 2026. This news came during the studio's fiscal year 2024 earnings presentation, where they outlined financial objectives for the upcoming fiscal year. A key statement from the presentation clarified their stance: "Even though we do not plan to release The Witcher 4 by the end of 2026, we are still driven by this financial goal."

During the subsequent Q&A session, the topic was revisited, but CD Projekt Red remained cautious about setting a specific release window or year beyond 2026. Chief Financial Officer Piotr Nielubowicz stated, "We are not going to announce the precise launch date for the game yet. All we could share now to give more visibility to investors is that the game will not be launched within the time frame of the first target for the incentive program, which ends December 31, 2026."

Full Speed Ahead In Production

While the release date may be further away than anticipated, The Witcher fans can take heart in knowing that the development of the fourth installment is progressing robustly. The game, previously known as Project Polaris, has entered "full production" as confirmed in CD Projekt's Q3 financial update last year. Nielubowicz expressed his optimism, saying, "Of all our projects, this one [Project Polaris/The Witcher 4] is currently the most far along, and we're starting the most intensive phase of development. I wish to thank the team for its effort and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for further progress."

The Witcher 4, officially titled at The Game Awards 2024 with a captivating six-minute cinematic trailer, marks a significant shift in the series. It introduces a new protagonist, Ciri, Geralt of Rivia's adoptive daughter, who steps into the limelight as a more mature character, ready to carve her own path.

CD Projekt announced on X (formerly Twitter) in October 2022 that The Witcher 4 will be the first title in a new trilogy. The subsequent entries, currently known as Project Canis Majoris and Project Orion, are slated to be released within a six-year window following The Witcher 4's launch.
