The objective of Tute is to be the first to accumulate a predetermined number of points. Players utilize the traditional Spanish deck, which consists of forty cards. The card hierarchy, from highest to lowest, is as follows: Ace (11 points), 3 (10 points), King (4 points), Knight (3 points), Jack (2 points), and then the white cards—7, 6, 5, 4, and 2—which carry no point value.

In each round, the suit of the first card played sets the leading suit, and players are required to follow suit if possible. If a player lacks cards of the leading suit, they may play any card, including trump cards. The trick is won by the highest card of the trump suit if any are played; otherwise, it goes to the highest card of the leading suit.
