Sonic 3 Overtakes All But Super Mario as North America's Top-Grossing Video Game Movie

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has raced past another milestone, becoming the second highest-grossing video game movie adaptation of all time in North America. With Keanu Reeves joining the cast as Shadow the Hedgehog, the film has now earned over $204 million domestically after its fourth weekend, which brought in $11 million across 3,582 locations. Globally, the movie has amassed an impressive $384.8 million.

Sonic 3 has surpassed its predecessor, Sonic 2, in the domestic box office race. However, it remains far behind the top-earning video game adaptation, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which raked in an astounding $574,934,330 domestically and a staggering $1,359,146,628 worldwide. These figures set a high bar that may be tough to beat, though upcoming films like the Minecraft movie and the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel could come close.

Despite not reaching the top spot, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is a certified hit for Paramount, which has already greenlit Sonic 4.
