Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios released Baldur’s Gate 3's (BG3) Patch 8, signaling the end of major updates for this beloved RPG. The release of this final patch has led to a notable increase in player engagement, with the game's concurrent player count on Steam jumping from around 60,000 to over 169,000. This surge has positioned BG3 just outside of Steam's top 10 most played games.

Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, took to Twitter (X) on April 22 to comment on the sudden rise in players. He highlighted the thriving mod support as a key factor that allows the studio to shift focus to their "next big thing." It's been reported that Larian Studios will be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative ventures.

As a result, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently in discussions with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

Patch 8, first announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been eagerly anticipated by the community. This final update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and a host of other features.
