Superhero comics are no longer limited to inspiring movies and TV shows; they're now driving high-quality podcasts and audio dramas. DC has launched its most ambitious podcast project to date with "DC High Volume: Batman," a series that brings some of the Dark Knight's most iconic comic storylines to life in audio form. However, to fully immerse yourself in this experience, you shouldn't just stick to the main series.

DC is also introducing a companion series within the "DC High Volume: Batman" feed. Hosted by writer and journalist Coy Jandreau, these episodes delve into the creation of the main series, featuring interviews with the cast, crew, and the original comic creators who inspired it. The first companion episode, set to release on Thursday, April 24, will include conversations with Batman voice actor Jason Spisak and DC's Creative Director of Animation & Audio Content, Mike Pallotta.

IGN had the opportunity to speak with Jandreau about how this companion series enhances the "DC High Volume: Batman" experience, providing listeners with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the saga.

What Is DC High Volume: Batman?

To grasp the purpose of the companion series, it's essential to understand "DC High Volume: Batman." This project is a collaboration between DC and podcast giant Realm, aiming to present an ongoing audio drama based on classic Batman comic books like "Batman: Year One." The series features Jason Spisak voicing Bruce Wayne/Batman and Jay Paulson as Jim Gordon.

“DC High Volume is the first of its kind at this scale, essentially a one-to-one adaptation of classic Batman comic books into an immersive audio experience,” Jandreau explained to IGN. “It transforms stories like 'Batman: Year One' and 'The Long Halloween' into long-format radio plays with stunning production design, audio effects, talented voice actors, and a unique score for each character, offering a new way to experience stories I've loved my whole life.”

DC High Volume: Batman

The series begins with the shared origin story of Batman and Gordon in "Year One," progressing to "The Long Halloween," set in Batman's second year. Jandreau emphasized that this approach allows both long-time fans and newcomers to engage with the Batman mythos in a fresh medium.

As a comic enthusiast, Jandreau finds immense value in re-experiencing these iconic tales through audio. “Listening to these stories, the emotion and experience are conveyed in a different, yet equally powerful way,” he said. “It's not about subtracting from the art; it's about adding another dimension with audio. You can enjoy these stories in various settings, from driving to reading along, and each method offers a unique experience without diminishing the original comic's appeal.”

The High Volume Companion Series

Jandreau's companion series complements the main "DC High Volume: Batman" narrative by exploring the production process and the challenges of adapting comics for audio. Available in both audio and video formats within the main feed, the first episode launches on April 24, coinciding with the adaptation of "Batman: The Long Halloween."

“The idea was always to highlight the incredible talent behind the scenes,” Jandreau noted. “From voice actors and composers to DC staff and original comic creators, it's crucial for listeners to connect with these individuals.”

Jandreau's involvement stemmed from his work on the DC Studio Showcase video series, making him an ideal fit to delve into the creation of "DC High Volume: Batman."

In the first companion episode, Jandreau discusses with Spisak the nuances of voicing Batman, exploring how the character's voice evolves and adapts in different contexts. “It's fascinating to hear the Bat voice develop, to hear it change depending on who Batman is interacting with,” Jandreau shared.

The companion series is not structured to strictly follow each chapter of the main series but rather focuses on key emotional and plot points. “It's about hitting an emotional beat that resonates with both the interviewees and the audience, enhancing their experience at the right moment,” Jandreau explained.

For inspiration, Jandreau looked to shows like "Inside the Actors Studio," "Hot Ones," and classic late-night talk shows, aiming to blend long-form interviews with innovative questioning and a lively talk-show atmosphere.

The Future of DC High Volume: Batman

Looking ahead, Jandreau hopes to interview key figures like Jeph Loeb, the writer of "The Long Halloween," and Jim Lee, his collaborator on "Batman: Hush." “Their insights are invaluable, especially given their contributions to the Batman canon,” Jandreau said.

He also expressed interest in speaking with Tom King, whose Batman run from 2016-2019 included significant storylines like the attempted marriage to Catwoman. “Tom King's perspective on Batman, influenced by his CIA background, adds a unique dimension to the character,” Jandreau noted.

Ultimately, Jandreau aims for the companion series to foster positivity within the Batman fandom. “In a world where negativity can be prevalent, especially online, it's important to celebrate these stories and their fans in a positive light,” he said. “We want to create a welcoming space for both die-hard fans and newcomers, ensuring that the love for Batman and comics remains inclusive and uplifting.”
