The critically acclaimed series Shōgun, which has garnered an impressive 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is set to return for a much-anticipated second season. According to an official press release from FX, Cosmo Jarvis, who portrays pilot John Blackthorn, will reprise his role and also step into the position of co-executive producer for Season 2. Additionally, Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga and signed on for the new season last May after the show's initial limited series run, has been elevated to executive producer following his role in producing the first season.
Production for the second season is slated to commence in January 2026, with filming taking place in Vancouver, the same location used for the original series. FX has described the upcoming season as "a wholly original new chapter" to the first season, which was adapted from James Clavell's novel of the same name. The network provided insight into the narrative connection between the two seasons:
"In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.
"Part two of Shōgun is set 10 years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined."
Fans eager to see more of this acclaimed series can look forward to potential new episodes by the end of 2026, though for now, all we can do is wait and hope for its successful return.
