Critical Role Video Game Announcement Could Arrive 'Any Day,' Travis Willingham Confirms

Critical Role, the wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons show, is on the cusp of releasing its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting at an imminent announcement—potentially "any day now." This exciting news emerged during a recent interview with Business Insider. While details remain scarce regarding the game's title and its precise connection to the Critical Role universe, Willingham confirmed the development team is diligently working on the project.

"They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," he explained, highlighting the game's interactive narrative.

Willingham, a prominent actor and Critical Role star, co-founded the company alongside fellow voice acting luminaries like Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. Since its inception, Critical Role has blossomed into a sprawling multimedia franchise, with its Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina, achieving significant success.

The upcoming video game will join Critical Role's expanding portfolio, although it won't necessarily be directly tied to existing projects. In December 2024, Willingham revealed to Rolling Stone that the team was actively pursuing a video game spinoff, stating they were "starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve been undertaking for the last couple of years." Whether the game will follow a specific campaign or introduce an original story within the Exandria setting remains to be seen.

While a previous estimate suggested an announcement before the end of 2024 or early 2025, the recent "any day now" statement suggests an imminent reveal. Willingham previously commented to Rolling Stone on the challenges of the interactive entertainment industry, stating, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels… There’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

A release date for the Critical Role video game is yet to be announced. In the meantime, fans can look forward to updates on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
