Crytek Announces Layoffs Affecting 15% of its Workforce
Game developer Crytek has announced a difficult decision to lay off approximately 60 employees, representing 15% of its 400-person staff. The layoffs, affecting both development and support teams, are attributed to challenging market conditions and the need to ensure the company's long-term financial stability.
In a statement released by Crytek founder Avni Yerli, the company cited the decision to put Crysis 4 on hold in Q3 2024 and subsequent efforts to transition staff to the growing Hunt: Showdown 1896 as contributing factors. Despite these cost-cutting measures, layoffs were deemed unavoidable to maintain financial sustainability. Crytek will provide severance packages and career support to affected employees.
Yerli emphasized Crytek's continued commitment to Hunt: Showdown 1896, highlighting its strong performance as a key component of the company's future. Development and expansion of Hunt: Showdown 1896, along with continued support for the CRYENGINE, will remain priorities.
The announcement follows previous reports of a canceled Crysis battle royale project, codenamed Crysis Next. Crysis 4, announced in January 2022, was subsequently prioritized over Crysis Next. The Crysis series, known for its demanding visuals and innovative gameplay, last saw a mainline release with Crysis 3 in 2013. While remasters of earlier titles have been released, news on Crysis 4 has been scarce since its initial announcement. The layoffs underscore the ongoing challenges facing the video game industry.
