Final Fantasy 9 Remake rumors have reignited following a cryptic tweet from Square Enix. The message, referencing one of the game’s most iconic lines, has fans buzzing with speculation about a potential FF9 remake—especially in light of the game’s upcoming 25th anniversary.
Square Enix recently posted on X (formerly Twitter) on April 7, sharing an image featuring the quote: “My memories will be part of the sky…” — a line famously spoken by Vivi, one of FF9’s most beloved characters, during the game’s emotional conclusion. The post was captioned “If you know, you know,” along with a crying emoji, prompting immediate excitement across the fanbase.
While this is far from an official announcement, the deliberate use of such a poignant quote and its timing have fueled strong speculation that Square Enix may soon reveal a remake project for Final Fantasy 9. With the game’s 25th anniversary approaching, it would make sense for the company to consider revisiting this classic entry in the franchise.
A Final Fantasy 9 remake has long been a fan-favorite request, thanks to the original title’s enduring charm, memorable characters, and deeply emotional storytelling. Notably, even Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi has called FF9 his favorite installment in the series. Given the success of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, many believe it's only a matter of time before Square Enix turns its attention to FF9.
In fact, Naoki Yoshida, producer of Final Fantasy XIV, hinted at the possibility during a 2024 interview with Video Games. While he acknowledged the high demand for a FF9 remake, he also noted the challenges involved, stating:
"Of course, I do know there are requests for Final Fantasy IX to be made, but when you think about Final Fantasy IX, it’s a game with huge volume. When you think about all of that volume, I wonder if it’s possible to remake that as a single title. It’s a difficult one. It is a tough question."
To mark the game’s milestone, Square Enix launched a dedicated 25th-anniversary website, which promises a variety of commemorative projects celebrating Final Fantasy 9. This alone has led to fresh waves of speculation about a possible remake.
Among the highlights, fans noticed something particularly intriguing: new Formisfigre figures of Zidane and Garnet now available for pre-order via Square Enix’s e-store. What caught players’ attention was the product description, which states:
"To commemorate the 25th anniversary, the texture of the costume has been reinterpreted and recreated in three dimensions."
This updated aesthetic has led some to speculate that these modernized character designs could offer a glimpse into what a remake might look like. Whether intentional or not, the redesigns have certainly added fuel to the rumor fire.
Although no official confirmation has been made yet, the combination of Square Enix’s recent social media activity, the 25th-anniversary celebration, and subtle design updates seen in new merchandise gives fans ample reason to hope that a Final Fantasy 9 remake may finally be in development.
