Wizards of the Coast is bringing the iconic world of Final Fantasy into the realm of Magic: The Gathering with a thrilling crossover set this summer. Over the weekend, they unveiled a substantial portion of the cards, sparking excitement among fans with nods to their favorite Final Fantasy games.

The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy offers both a traditional Commander experience and a booster-driven series, resulting in an extensive array of cards. The main set spans the entire mainline series, from Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 16. Meanwhile, the Commander Decks hone in on four beloved games: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, led by Commanders Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola, respectively.

For instance, Final Fantasy IV's Cecil showcases a unique mechanic that reflects his transformation from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. Summons from the series are represented as "Saga Creatures," blending the mechanics of Magic with the iconic summons of Final Fantasy.

A standout card, Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, features artwork by Square's Tetsuya Nomura, depicting Sephiroth's transformation from a young fighter to the formidable Safer Sephiroth on the card Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

Reprints and new versions of existing Magic cards cleverly intertwine with Final Fantasy lore. For example, Skullclamp draws inspiration from the Jenova project in Final Fantasy 7.

To bring some levity, the set includes light-hearted moments like Final Fantasy 10's iconic and often memed scene featured on Inspiring Call.

Clever Concealment riffs on the Wall Market scene from Final Fantasy 7, while Secret Rendezvous offers four different versions of the Golden Saucer date scene, featuring Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

The Final Fantasy 14 set, in particular, contains numerous references to the beloved MMORPG. The Hildibrand Manderville card humorously captures the character's habit of disappearing and returning, while the Archaeomancer's Map card uses a location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map.

Final Fantasy 14 enthusiasts have embraced the cards with humor, referencing popular memes like "This is Thancred" and adding alternative flavor text to cards like Rite of Replication to commemorate iconic speeches.

Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...

While the Commander decks received significant attention, reveals like Commune With Beavers have me eager to explore how the other Final Fantasy games are integrated into the full Magic set.

Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy set is set to launch on June 13, 2025, with pre-release events starting a week earlier.
