Final Fantasy Tactics Creator Aimed to Confront Division

Final Fantasy Tactics creator Yasumi Matsuno has shared the origins of the game, explaining that he wrote its story to bring comfort to people living in an era "stripped of hope."

Now, as the long-rumored Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles receives a release date later this year, Matsuno shared a heartfelt message on X/Twitter stating that he "offers this story once more"—almost as if speaking to the deep uncertainty and division that also trouble us in 2025.

"Almost three decades ago, the collapse of Japan's bubble economy left the country's financial institutions buried in bad debt. This triggered a wave of corporate bankruptcies, a sharp spike in unemployment, and widespread social stagnation. It was a time when hope faded for many and dreams were judged only by their cost."

"In that historical context, I created a story," he continued. "It followed Ramza, a young man locked in a tireless struggle against a rigid class system. It was also the story of Delita, a character determined to exploit the chaos and despair to climb the social ladder. It was a tale of intertwined friendship and betrayal—a peculiar twist of fate."

"And now, in 2025—a period still marked by deep inequality and division—I offer this story again. The power to resist rests in your hands."

The Final Fantasy Tactics remaster offers two editions: the original classic (with the War of the Lions translation) and a new version featuring full voice acting, a redesigned interface, expanded story content and adjustments, and improved visuals. It launches on PS5 and PS5 on September 30, 2025.
