Shawn Levy, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of venturing into a galaxy far, far away, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy's Star Wars film is in negotiations with Gosling to take a leading role. Levy has been developing this project since 2022, with a script finalized last year. He's reuniting with Jonathan Tropper, the screenwriter behind This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy directed.
Naturally, plot details are under wraps. There's no information yet on Gosling's character or the film's time period within the Star Wars timeline. What is known is that the story will be separate from the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also indicates it's intended as a standalone film, rather than the start of a trilogy.

Gosling's potential involvement has reportedly accelerated the film's progress. While Levy was previously attached to direct a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR suggests that if Gosling signs on, this Star Wars project will become Levy's next priority, with production potentially starting this fall.
Star Wars is currently navigating a transitional phase. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its latest series, Skeleton Crew. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed filming in December, targeting a May 22, 2026 release. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey from the sequel trilogy is also in the works.
A release date for Levy's Star Wars movie remains unannounced, pending its advancement this year. For a comprehensive look at the future of the Star Wars universe, see our preview of Star Wars in 2025.
