The modder known as Dark Space, who created a playable version of the Grand Theft Auto 6 map within Grand Theft Auto 5, has officially ceased all work on the project following a takedown notice from Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games. The mod, which was based on leaked coordinate data and official trailer shots of GTA 6, gained significant attention in January as eager fans sought a glimpse into what the upcoming game might offer.
Dark Space had made the mod available for free download and shared gameplay footage on his YouTube channel. However, the project came to an abrupt halt when Take-Two issued a copyright removal request, leading to a strike on Dark Space's YouTube channel. In response, he removed all download links to his mod and posted a video criticizing Take-Two's actions, suggesting that the accuracy of his map recreation may have been too close for comfort.
In an interview with IGN, Dark Space expressed a more resigned perspective, noting that he had anticipated such a move from Take-Two given their history of takedowns. He acknowledged that his mod, which was partly based on a community mapping project using leaked coordinates, could have potentially spoiled the surprise of GTA 6's map for players.
As a result, Dark Space has decided to abandon the project entirely, citing Take-Two's clear stance against its existence. He plans to focus on creating content that his audience enjoys but will steer clear of any further GTA 5 mods related to GTA 6 due to the risks involved.
Concerns are now rising within the GTA 6 community about the potential targeting of the community mapping project by Take-Two. IGN has reached out to the group for their comments on the situation.
Take-Two has a track record of enforcing copyright on fan projects, with recent actions including the takedown of the 'GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition' YouTube channel, which aimed to enhance the 2002 game using the 2008 GTA 4 engine.
A former Rockstar developer, Obbe Vermeij, defended Take-Two's actions, explaining that the company is protecting its commercial interests. He noted that mods like the Vice City Nextgen Edition compete directly with official remasters, and similar projects could interfere with potential future releases.
As fans await the release of GTA 6, IGN continues to provide coverage on related developments, including insights from former Rockstar developers on potential release delays, statements from Take-Two's leadership on the future of GTA Online, and expert opinions on the performance capabilities of the PS5 Pro for running GTA 6.
