With the eagerly anticipated release of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a comprehensive update to its official website, the spotlight has shifted to the launch platforms and the newly confirmed release date of May 26, 2026. The trailer's conclusion prominently displays this date alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S logos, affirming that these consoles will be part of GTA 6's initial launch. Notably, Trailer 2 was specifically captured on a PS5, highlighting its performance capabilities.
So, what does this mean for the much-anticipated PC release or even a potential launch on the Nintendo Switch 2? While some fans hoped that the delay to May 2026 might encourage Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, to opt for a simultaneous PC release, the absence of any PC mention in the trailer suggests otherwise. This omission aligns with Rockstar's traditional strategy for its previous titles, yet in today's gaming landscape, particularly by 2025 and 2026, it seems somewhat outdated. Given the increasing significance of the PC platform for a game's success, is GTA 6's exclusion from a PC launch a missed opportunity or a strategic error?IGN posed this question to Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, during an interview in February. Zelnick hinted at GTA 6's eventual release on PC, noting, "So with Civ 7 it's available on console and PC and Switch right away. With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms."
GTA 6 is currently slated to launch exclusively on consoles. Rockstar's history of delaying PC releases for its major titles, coupled with its complex relationship with the modding community, has not gone unnoticed by fans. Despite this, many hoped that GTA 6 could mark a shift in Rockstar's approach to PC gaming.
While major Rockstar titles do eventually make their way to PC, the timeline for GTA 6 remains a mystery. Could it be Fall 2027, early 2027, or perhaps a year later in May 2027? In December 2023, a former Rockstar developer attempted to shed light on why GTA 6 would first come to PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, urging PC gamers to give the studio the "benefit of the doubt" regarding its launch strategy.
How significant could skipping a PC launch for GTA 6 be? Zelnick shared with IGN that the PC version of a multiplatform game can account for 40% of overall sales, or even more in some cases. He added, "We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue. Of course, there will be a new console generation."
Meanwhile, the absence of a Nintendo Switch 2 logo in GTA 6 Trailer 2 was expected. Although the capabilities of the Switch 2 remain a mystery, it is set to receive CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077, sparking some hope that GTA 6, which is slated for the less powerful Xbox Series S, might also make its way to Nintendo's next-gen console.
