Known as a health inspector's worst nightmare, Krusty Burger is famously behind creations like the Ribwich, The Clogger, and the "Steamed Ham" (according to Principal Skinner). This set includes seven minifigures, featuring Krusty the Clown, Sideshow Bob, Homer Simpson, and Officer Lou. You can get it for $209.99 starting June 4, though LEGO Insiders get Early Access beginning June 1. Sign up for a free account here.

To dive deeper into the set's origins, we spoke with its designer. Ann Healy, a Senior Model Designer who has been with the LEGO Group for six years, shared insights into creating LEGO The Simpsons: Krusty Burger—the first new Simpsons set in nearly ten years. Her comments have been lightly edited for clarity.

What other LEGO sets have you worked on over the past six years?

Healy: I spent three years designing for the LEGO Friends theme. Later, I had the chance to work on a personal Disney favorite: The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage set from Hocus Pocus. That project took years to develop, and I'm very proud of the result.

More recently, I’ve been part of the LEGO Icons team. Last year, I designed the McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna set as well as the Poinsettia LEGO Botanicals set.

What prompted the decision to bring back The Simpsons theme after such a long break?

Healy: Even after a decade without a new Simpsons set, we noticed strong affection for the series among LEGO fans. Market research confirmed The Simpsons’ global appeal and lasting brand loyalty. Designing a Krusty Burger set felt like a natural next step for the theme and allowed us to introduce brand-new minifigures.

Coincidentally, the original Simpsons House and Kwik-E-Mart sets were among the last I bought before joining the LEGO Group. In my first week, I spotted an early Krusty Burger prototype in the office. LEGO designers often build personal projects hoping they’ll become official sets someday. Seeing that model gave me hope that I might one day work on something similar.

Five years later, our Head of Marketing took that same prototype off the shelf and said it was time to revisit The Simpsons. As a lifelong fan, I volunteered immediately. I couldn't believe my luck!

Can you walk us through the design and building process? How many times did you rebuild the entire model before finalizing it?

Healy: I began by refining the old prototype, settling on the layout and planning the instruction steps. I started digitally, then built a physical version. I repeatedly switched between digital and physical builds to ensure everything worked with real bricks. Regular check-ins with the design team provided feedback from our Creative Lead and fellow designers.

I also held reviews with the IP partner, sharing updates and incorporating their notes on the model and minifigures. Internal reviews with the Model Governance and Building Experience teams involved testing construction steps, play features, and structural strength.

I didn’t count every rebuild, but I estimate at least 20 times. The final build was for quality assurance when the first production boxes arrived from the factory.

Unlike Moe's Tavern or the Simpsons’ house, Krusty Burger isn’t as consistently detailed in the show. Which episodes did you reference to map out its design?

Healy: Disney provided helpful reference images and layouts. I also watched numerous episodes to adapt the animated world into a tangible playset.

We referred most to Season 20, Episode 21, “Coming to Homerica,” which inspired the Mother Nature Burger featured in this set. The “Ribwich” from Season 14, Episode 12, “I'm Spelling as Fast as I Can,” is also included.

Other key episodes include:

Season 6, Episode 15, “Homie the Clown” – Homer performs at Krusty Burger. Season 12, Episode 13, “Day of the Jackanapes” – Bart and Sideshow Bob visit Krusty Burger. Season 10, Episode 1, “Lard of the Dance” – Homer tries to sell restaurant grease. Season 7, Episode 15, “Bart the Fink” – Features the IRS Burger takeover. Season 19, Episode 1, “He Loves to Fly and He D'ohs” – Homer hides in the Krusty Zone ball pit. Season 15, Episode 10, “Diatribe of a Mad Housewife” – Shows the drive-thru sign. Season 21, Episode 4, "Treehouse of Horror XX" – Krusty Burger appears in “Don't Have a Cow, Mankind.”

What’s your favorite hidden Easter egg in the set?

Healy: Above the drive-thru window, a kitchen screen shows an order for 700 burgers. This nods to Season 5’s “Boy-Scoutz 'n the Hood,” where Krusty opens an ill-advised oil rig Krusty Burger at sea.

What was the toughest design challenge, and how did you solve it?

Healy: The most rewarding challenge was constructing the Krusty Burger sign. The IP partner was very particular about Krusty’s facial proportions, providing references and sketches to help us capture his look. A colleague with illustration experience helped refine Krusty’s features in brick form.

Another hurdle was making the heavy sign stable on a single axle. Our Element Lead suggested using a new axle sleeve she was developing, which added the necessary support.

Is this a one-time release, or can we expect more LEGO Simpsons sets in the future?

Healy: I can’t comment on future products due to company and partner policies. But as a huge Simpsons fan, I hope this set gets a warm reception!

LEGO The Simpsons: Krusty Burger, Set #10352, has 1635 pieces and retails for $209.99. It goes on sale June 4 for the general public, with LEGO Insiders able to purchase from June 1.
