NetEase Games Issues Warning: Marvel Rivals Modders Face Potential Bans
NetEase Games, developer and publisher of the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players utilizing modifications (mods). The company explicitly stated that any modding activity, regardless of type (cosmetic or gameplay-enhancing), violates the game's terms of service and risks permanent account bans.
This announcement follows the launch of Marvel Rivals Season 1, which introduced new playable characters (Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic from the Fantastic Four) and adjustments to existing heroes. Despite attempts to counter modding through Season 1's update (checking asset hashes), workarounds have emerged. Mods, such as one transforming Mister Fantastic into One Piece's Luffy, have circulated online, highlighting the ongoing challenge for NetEase Games.
While the existence of any actual bans remains unconfirmed, NetEase Games has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards modifications, cheats, and hacks. Although some mods have been removed from platforms like Nexus Mods, others, including a workaround with over 500 downloads, persist. The company's response to this ongoing situation remains to be seen. The game, nominated for Online Game of the Year at the DICE Awards 2025, continues to enjoy widespread popularity despite these challenges. The DICE Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 13th in Las Vegas.
The potential for bans, coupled with past instances of erroneous account suspensions, underscores the risks associated with modding Marvel Rivals. NetEase Games' commitment to upholding its terms of service is clear, leaving the future impact of modding on the player base uncertain.
