Marvel Unveils Star Wars Series on New Republic Era

Marvel Comics is set to relaunch its flagship Star Wars series in May 2025, diving into the aftermath of the Battle of Jakku and the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. This new volume will chronicle the efforts of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa as they strive to establish the New Republic and bring stability to a galaxy still reeling from conflict.

Penned by Alex Segura, who previously worked on the Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku miniseries, the series will feature artwork by the renowned Star Wars artist Phil Noto, known for his work on Star Wars: Poe Dameron. Both Noto and Leinil Yu will contribute to the cover art of the first issue.

Segura and Noto's Star Wars is set roughly two years after the events of Return of the Jedi, following the last major clash between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance at the Battle of Jakku. In this hopeful new era, the New Republic is seeking to establish itself as the new ruling force in the galaxy. However, Luke and friends will face new challenges as opportunistic pirates, thieves, and other villains seek to take advantage of the power vacuum.

Segura shared his excitement with StarWars.com, stating, "Now that we've put the period at the end of the Galactic Civil War with the Battle of Jakku, we can speed ahead into a new, uncharted era, with some new galactic threats, foes, and mysteries for our beloved heroes to grapple with, blending the familiar with the new and shocking. These stories will be packed with action and the character moments Star Wars fans have come to expect, featuring twists on the galaxy and landscape we know, with an eye toward making sure people can jump in easily and with any issue. We can't wait."

Noto also expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "Alex is an amazing writer and has come up with some great storylines and new characters for this series and I’m thrilled for the opportunity to bring them to life on the page! It’s also been exciting to draw the classic characters in the post-Return of the Jedi era because there’s no existing film or TV versions of them. I get to create new looks for them while also having reference of the actors from the 80s to help sell the look of this timeline."

Star Wars #1 is slated for release on May 7, 2025, perfectly timed to coincide with this year's Star Wars Day celebrations.

This new series is just one part of Marvel's expanded universe post-Return of the Jedi. In February, the publisher will also launch Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, which delves into Kylo Ren's journey following the events of The Last Jedi.
