Monster Hunter Wilds Player Base Sees a Steep Decline

A Drop from Over a Million to Around 40,000

Monster Hunter Wilds was one of this year's most anticipated releases and quickly became Capcom's fastest-selling game. However, the initial surge of players has subsided, with concurrent player numbers dropping substantially three months post-launch.

As highlighted by Monster Hunter YouTuber Zenny, the concurrent player count for MH Wilds has been nearly halved since May, now approaching levels seen by the older title, Monster Hunter World. Recent data from SteamDB shows MH Wilds with a 24-hour peak of 41,101 players, closely rivaling MH World's 26,479 at the time of writing.

For comparison, MH World's third month on Steam boasted over 100,000 concurrent players, significantly higher than MH Wilds' current 40,000. Many players point to a perceived lack of endgame content in MH Wilds, even after its first Title Update, as a key reason for the drop. The upcoming second Title Update this summer, promising new monsters and events, could potentially revitalize the game's player numbers.

MH Wilds Crosses Over with Street Fighter

Another element that might lure players back is a collaboration with another beloved Capcom franchise, Street Fighter. On May 19th, the official Monster Hunter Twitter account posted an image featuring a paw print styled after Street Fighter 6's urban aesthetic.

While not officially confirmed, such a collaboration seems likely, as the two series have partnered before in Monster Hunter World. That crossover introduced armor sets for Ryu and Sakura, paid gestures like the Hadoken and Shoryuken, and a Chun-Li costume for the Handler.

This event would mark the first major collaboration for MH Wilds, and fans are eager to see how Capcom will implement the crossover. The Monster Hunter series has a rich history of crossovers with various IPs, including Devil May Cry and Sonic in MH4, Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem in MH Generations Ultimate, and Assassin's Creed and Mega Man in MH World, among many others.

Despite the current dip, expectations remain high for MH Wilds' player base to grow again throughout the year, fueled by planned updates and events. Monster Hunter Wilds is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For the latest news and updates on the game, be sure to check out our related coverage below.
