Ahead of the Switch 2's launch this week, Nintendo has confirmed that users of the new console should leave the protective film on its screen in place.
As part of its health and safety guidance for the Switch 2, available as a downloadable PDF, Nintendo includes tips on how to handle the device with care (via NintendoSoup).
The document makes the following recommendation: "The screen features a protective film that helps contain fragments if it gets damaged. Do not remove it."
Essentially, this adhesive layer is designed to prevent the Switch 2's screen from shattering into pieces in case of an accident. Removing it increases the risk of broken glass scattering if the screen cracks.
So, when you unbox your Switch 2 later this week, be mindful not to remove the protective film along with the rest of the packaging.
Nintendo also suggests avoiding using the Switch 2 in "dusty or smoky environments"—so leave it at home when heading to a club or visiting dusty old bookstores.
"Remember to charge the built-in batteries at least once every six months," the guidelines state. "Extended periods without use may prevent the batteries from holding a charge." Hopefully, you’ll be enjoying titles like Mario Kart World regularly enough that this won’t be an issue.

Some of the other warnings are more straightforward. Nintendo advises not to "expose the device to fire, microwaves, direct sunlight, or extreme temperatures." That sounds reasonable!
After years of speculation, teasers, and leaks, Nintendo is officially launching the Switch 2 this Thursday, June 5, 2025.
Last month, some customers started receiving their Switch 2 units ahead of the official launch. Unboxing videos and startup sequences appeared online, though Nintendo was quick to take them down.
