Following a failed Dire Maul North run in World of Warcraft Classic's Anniversary servers, streamer Pirate Software was ousted from the prominent OnlyFangs guild. The recent addition of Dire Maul to the Anniversary servers has already claimed several OnlyFangs Hardcore characters.
Prior to Blizzard's official launch of Hardcore servers in August 2023 (which initially saw declining popularity until the November 2024 Anniversary server release), players self-regulated zero-death runs. The Anniversary servers revitalized World of Warcraft Classic, significantly impacting the population of the original Classic servers. Numerous Hardcore players have perished since the Anniversary servers launched, while others have achieved level 60 under the challenging conditions. Sara and Snupy are among the recent casualties, directly attributed to Pirate Software's actions, leading to his banishment by Sodapoppin.
Social media posts and a Discord statement from Guild Master Sodapoppin confirm Pirate Software's expulsion. The statement cites widespread guild discomfort following the deaths of two members during the Dire Maul run. The incident unfolded when the OnlyFangs group engaged a boss prematurely, triggering a pack of Gordok ogres. Despite a party member urging a retreat and reset, Pirate Software abandoned the group during the escape, resulting in the deaths of Sara and Snupy. While normally permissible under OnlyFangs rules, his refusal to acknowledge responsibility solidified his removal. A video capturing the event (containing strong language) is available online.
Central to the criticism is Pirate Software's unwillingness to accept blame. Sodapoppin, during a post-run review, highlighted Pirate Software's failure to utilize crowd control, specifically Blizzard rank 1, to mitigate the threat without excessive mana expenditure. Mizkif and other OnlyFangs members also allege post-incident threats contributed to the decision. Pirate Software countered on Twitter, expressing dissatisfaction with the handling of the situation.
OnlyFangs has experienced multiple member departures since its recreation on the Anniversary server Doomhowl, potentially leading to the formation of new groups. With Blizzard's ongoing updates to World of Warcraft Classic, including Vanilla-accurate patches, further casualties within OnlyFangs are anticipated as new dungeons and raids are introduced.
