PlayStation Stars Program Ends After 3 Years

May 22,2025

Sony has recently announced the termination of its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, marking the end of the initiative less than three years after its inception in July 2022. As of today, new memberships are no longer being accepted, and those who choose to cancel their existing membership will find themselves unable to rejoin. Moreover, upon cancellation, any accumulated reward points will be permanently deleted.

Current members, however, have until July 23, 2025, to continue earning points, with the opportunity to redeem any remaining balance until November 3, 2026. Despite the program's closure, Sony has assured that PlayStation Stars' Digital Collectibles, including unique items like the 3D digital model of a Jim Ryan bobblehead, will remain accessible for the foreseeable future.

Grace Chen, PlayStation's vice president of network advertising, loyalty, and licensed merchandise, shared insights on the PlayStation blog, stating, "Since launching the program, we've learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends." She added that the decision to wind down the current version of PlayStation Stars was made after careful evaluation, and the company is looking into new ways to build upon the insights gained from the program. However, no details about a potential replacement for the scheme were disclosed, leaving the future of loyalty rewards for PlayStation users uncertain.

PlayStation Stars was designed to reward PS5 owners with points that had real cash value based on purchases made in the PlayStation Store, as well as for engaging in various activities such as completing surveys or exploring different games and system features. The program served as a competitor to Microsoft's Xbox Rewards, although both schemes have seen adjustments over time that have reduced their profitability.

Last summer, PlayStation Stars faced a month-long service interruption, and in October, Sony introduced changes that included reducing the validity of points from 24 months to 12 months and excluding PlayStation Plus membership from points-eligible purchases. Now, the entire program is set to be phased out completely.
