PS5, Switch Game Dev Takes a Back Seat as 80% of Devs Focus on PC

The Game Developers Conference's (GDC) 2025 State of the Game Industry report revealed a significant trend: 80% of game developers are prioritizing PC game development. Let's delve into the key findings of this insightful report.

The 2025 State of the Game Industry Report

PC Dominates: 80% of Developers Target This Platform

GDC's January 21, 2025, report highlighted a remarkable statistic: a full 80% of game developers are currently creating games for PC. This represents a substantial 14% increase from the 66% reported in 2024. While the exact reasons remain unclear, the report suggests the rising popularity of Valve's Steam Deck may be a contributing factor. Interestingly, although the Steam Deck wasn't a selectable platform option in the survey, 44% of respondents who used the "Other" category specified the Steam Deck as a target platform.

Last year's report already identified the PC as the dominant platform, even amidst the growth of UGC platforms like Roblox and Minecraft, and the anticipation surrounding the Switch 2. This PC-centric trend has been steadily growing, increasing from 56% in 2020 to 66% in 2024. The continued dominance of PC suggests an even larger library of PC games in the future. However, the upcoming release of the Switch 2, with its promised graphical and performance enhancements, could potentially influence this trend.

Live Service Games: A Third of AAA Developers Involved

The report also revealed that one-third (33%) of AAA game developers are currently working on live-service titles. Expanding this to all respondents, 16% are actively developing live-service games, with an additional 13% expressing interest. Conversely, 41% indicated no interest in developing this type of game.

Developers currently involved in live-service projects cite the potential for significant financial returns and strong community building as key advantages. However, those less interested highlighted concerns such as declining player interest, creative limitations, potentially predatory monetization practices, and the risk of developer burnout.

GDC itself points to "market oversaturation" as a major challenge for live-service games, with many developers struggling to maintain a sustainable player base. The recent closure of Ubisoft's XDefiant after only six months serves as a stark example of this difficulty.

Geographic Representation: A Western-Centric Perspective?

A January 23, 2025, report by PC Gamer highlighted a potential bias in GDC's survey. Nearly 70% of respondents were from Western countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia). Notably, China, a major player in the mobile gaming market, was underrepresented, as were Japanese developers.

This skewed representation suggests the report's findings might primarily reflect the perspectives and experiences of Western developers, potentially not fully capturing the global state of the game industry.
