Marvel Snap's avian additions are few and far between, limited to Cosmo, Groose, Zabu, and Hit Monkey—until now. Redwing, Falcon's loyal companion, joins the roster as part of the Brave New World season.
Redwing's Mechanics in Marvel Snap
Redwing is a 3-cost, 4-power card with a unique ability: The first time it moves, it adds a card from your hand to its previous location.
However, there are limitations: Redwing's ability is a one-time use, unaffected by cards like Symbiote Spider-Man or attempts to replay it. Precise card targeting with Redwing proves challenging. Move decks often utilize low-cost cards (like Iron Fist) that are undesirable targets, while Scream decks typically manipulate opponent's cards rather than their own.
Despite these limitations, inexpensive movement options exist, such as Madame Web or Cloak (for lower Collection Level players). Redwing's potential for surprise victories is real, enabling early Galactus plays or drawing powerful cards like The Infinaut.
Optimal Redwing Decks (Day One)
Ares and Surtur dominated the previous season, returning with a Scream-based strategy enhanced by Aero and Heimdall. Redwing surprisingly integrates well, although playing Surtur on turn 3 remains the priority. This deck, however, is expensive, featuring Series 5 cards: Hydra Bob, Scream, Redwing, Surtur, Ares, and Cull Obsidian. Hydra Bob can be substituted with a 1-cost alternative (Rocket Raccoon or Iceman).
The strategy revolves around a turn 3 Surtur play, followed by high-power cards to boost Surtur's power, supplemented by Scream's power-stealing capability. Polaris, Aero, and Magneto provide card manipulation, while Redwing, when played into Heimdall, buffs Surtur and draws a high-power card.
Another potential Redwing deck incorporates Madame Web, given Dagger's nerf has diminished move-based strategies. Madame Web's Ongoing ability complements current Ongoing decks, providing a niche for Redwing. This deck, however, relies heavily on Doom 2099 and includes only two Series 5 cards: Madame Web and Doom 2099. Removing Madame Web necessitates Redwing's removal for another Ongoing card like Mobius M. Mobius.
This is primarily a Doom 2099 Ongoing deck, aiming for rapid power distribution across locations. Madame Web facilitates strategic card placement, offering additional Sam Wilson manipulation. Redwing's activation is limited to this method, triggering on the turn after playing Madame Web. Turn 6 involves playing Doctor Doom or Spectrum for power distribution or a power spike, respectively.
Is Redwing Worth the Investment?
Currently, no. Redwing appears underpowered and reliant on a weak archetype. Saving resources for future cards is recommended, unless substantial buffs are implemented by Second Dinner.
