Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly

Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has canceled an unannounced incubation project this week, resulting in the layoff of an unspecified number of employees involved in the project. The news was initially reported by Insider Gaming, citing a now-deleted LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who mentioned their involvement in the project over the past year and their subsequent job search.

IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) project. The project was developed by a team that previously worked on a canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. Although the exact number of layoffs is unknown, a source familiar with the project described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual connected to the project has stated on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.

This development is part of a broader trend of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring at Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. That year saw the elimination of 50 jobs at BioWare and an unspecified number at Codemasters. The trend continued almost a year ago with the layoff of 670 employees across EA and the closure of multiple projects, including the Star Wars FPS, which affected around two dozen Respawn employees. Since then, EA has restructured BioWare, reassigning developers to other projects and laying off more key staff members.

IGN has reached out to Electronic Arts for a comment on these developments.
