The highly-rated Samsung 990 Evo Plus PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD has seen a significant price drop this week. Amazon currently lists the 2TB model at just $129.99 with free shipping, while the 4TB version is available for $252.01. This high-performance SSD works exceptionally well as both a PlayStation 5 upgrade (we recommend adding a heatsink) and a gaming PC boot drive. These prices represent $40-$50 savings over the Samsung 990 Pro, with nearly identical real-world performance for most gamers.

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus delivers excellent performance for both gaming PCs and PlayStation 5 consoles. Exceeding Sony's PS5 speed requirements, it offers sequential speeds up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,300MB/s write. While faster than the standard 990 Evo, it slightly trails the 990 Pro. The key difference lies in the absence of DRAM, though this doesn't affect PS5 performance. For PC use, its HMB (host memory buffer) technology compensates by utilizing minimal system RAM, making the performance difference negligible for gamers.
Unlike some models, the 990 Evo Plus doesn't include a preinstalled heatsink. However, its efficient single-sided design generates less heat than previous SSD generations. While it should function perfectly in a PS5 without thermal issues, we recommend adding an affordable ($10) PS5-compatible heatsink for optimal performance.
