The much-anticipated film adaptation of the 2012 video game Sleeping Dogs faced a setback earlier this month when it was officially cancelled. However, fans of the game now have a glimmer of hope, thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. As reported by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's call for an adaptation on X/Twitter, stating he is actively working to revive the project. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," Liu affirmed, showing his commitment to bringing the story to life.

Initially announced in 2017, the film was set to feature Donnie Yen in the lead role. However, the project vanished from the radar the following year, and just weeks ago, Yen himself confirmed its cancellation. He shared his disappointment, revealing the extensive effort and personal investment he had made. "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights," Yen stated. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"

The future of the Sleeping Dogs film seemed bleak until Liu's unexpected response to a social media post rekindled interest. While it remains uncertain whether Liu will secure the rights or successfully get the film off the ground, his involvement has certainly reignited excitement among fans.

Sleeping Dogs, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows the gripping narrative of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game received high praise, scoring an 8/10 in IGN's review, yet no sequels have been released to date.
