Skibidi Toilet DMCAs Garry's Mod But Legitimacy Remains Unclear

The creator of Garry's Mod, Garry Newman, reportedly received a DMCA takedown notice targeting unauthorized Skibidi Toilet Garry's Mod games. The notice, from an initially unidentified source, claimed no licensed Skibidi Toilet content exists for Garry's Mod, Steam, or Valve platforms.

While initially attributed to Invisible Narratives, the studio behind Skibidi Toilet's film and TV adaptations, the DMCA sender's identity remains unverified. A Discord profile seemingly belonging to the Skibidi Toilet creator denied sending the notice, as reported by Dexerto.

The irony lies in the Skibidi Toilet series' origins. Created by Alexey Gerasimov (DaFuq!?Boom! on YouTube), the series utilizes assets from Garry's Mod, a mod for Valve's Half-Life 2, and ported to Source Filmmaker, also a Valve product. This meme-driven series gained immense popularity, leading to merchandise and planned film/TV projects.

Garry Newman himself publicized the DMCA on the s&box Discord, highlighting the absurdity of the situation. Invisible Narratives' notice asserts copyright ownership of characters like Titan Cameraman, Titan Speakerman, Titan TV Man, and Skibidi Toilet. They cited DaFuq!?Boom! as the source of these characters.

However, this claim is paradoxical considering Garry's Mod's own reliance on Half-Life 2 assets, a fact that Valve has implicitly accepted given Garry's Mod's official release. Valve, as the owner of Half-Life 2 assets, arguably holds stronger grounds for any copyright infringement related to DaFuq!?Boom!'s work.

DaFuq!?Boom! subsequently denied involvement in the DMCA notice via the s&box Discord, expressing confusion and seeking contact with Garry Newman. The notice, filed "on behalf of copyright holder: Invisible Narratives, LLC," cites 2023 copyright registration for "Titan Cameraman and 3 Other Unpublished Works."

This isn't DaFuq!?Boom!'s first copyright controversy. Last September, they issued multiple copyright strikes against GameToons, a similar YouTuber, before eventually reaching an undisclosed agreement.

The legitimacy of the DMCA remains unclear, leaving the situation unresolved and highlighting the complexities of copyright in the rapidly evolving landscape of online content creation and meme culture.
