Stellar Blade's much-anticipated PC release has sparked discussions about its use of Denuvo, a form of Digital Rights Management (DRM). In a statement released on Twitter (X) on May 17, SHIFT UP assured fans that the DRM implementation has been meticulously optimized to maintain the game's performance. They noted, "DRM has been hard tuned to maintain the same average frame rate, with even higher minimum frames in some cases."
DRM technologies like Denuvo are employed to prevent unauthorized copying and distribution, which can lead to pirated versions of games. However, the inclusion of Denuvo has often been a point of contention due to its potential impact on game performance. To address these concerns, SHIFT UP shared detailed performance test results, comparing the game's performance with and without DRM. Their findings indicated negligible differences in average, minimum, and maximum frame rates, as well as in 1% and 0.1% low frame rates.
Moreover, SHIFT UP confirmed that Stellar Blade fully supports mods, a feature often restricted in games with DRM. While fans appreciated the studio's transparency, many expressed a preference for the game to be DRM-free to enhance accessibility.
Another significant concern for the PC release of Stellar Blade revolves around region locking, particularly related to PlayStation Network (PSN) restrictions. Despite the game not requiring a PSN connection, its availability is still limited in regions where PSN is not supported, affecting over 130 countries.
SHIFT UP is actively working to address these region lock issues, stating, "We are closely discussing the region lock issue with the publisher and are doing our BEST to resolve most of it as soon as possible." They also emphasized that both the PC and PS5 versions will offer identical content, ensuring that early buyers won't be disadvantaged by future updates.
While fans are grateful for SHIFT UP's efforts to tackle these issues, the desire for a DRM-free and unrestricted game remains strong. Stellar Blade's PC version is slated for release on June 11 on Steam. For the latest updates and more information on the game, be sure to check out our detailed article below!
