Tom Hardy recently expressed his thoughts on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' decision to introduce an Oscar category for Stunt Design, suggesting that a single award might not fully capture the complexity of the field. In an interview with IGN ahead of his upcoming film *Havoc*, the actor noted, "One Oscar—it's a bit too little too late in some aspects. It's good, it's great, but I think perhaps more is asked for." Hardy emphasized that stunt design is just one part of a larger ecosystem involving various teams whose efforts often go unnoticed.
"There are so many elements that go into stunts as a department," Hardy continued. "The design element is like an umbrella for a diaspora of different groups within that world that all need to be illuminated. Whether it's people on horseback, cars, people jumping off buildings, being on fire, fights, or even underwater stunts—this entire universe of individuals puts a lot on the line physically." Hardy, who has numerous friends in the stunt community, believes that recognizing their contributions goes beyond just a single award.
Gareth Evans, director of *Havoc* and known for his work on *The Raid* series, echoed Hardy's sentiments. "Subcategories would be nice," he stated. "I don't think awards drive the craft, but it's about time it got rewarded and recognized. It's hard to understand why it wasn't acknowledged earlier." While the stunt design category will debut at the 2028 Academy Awards, fans won't have to wait that long to see Hardy in action. *Havoc* releases on Netflix this Friday, April 25th.
