Marvel Rivals has sparked a heated debate following the removal of over 500 mods from the game in a single month. Tensions rose when Nexus Mods, a popular modding platform, took down modifications that replaced Captain America's head with images of political figures Joe Biden and Donald Trump. This action ignited a wave of reactions among users.
The owner of Nexus Mods, known by the pseudonym TheDarkOne, addressed the issue in a private Reddit discussion. He explained that both mods, featuring Trump and Biden, were removed simultaneously to prevent any accusations of political bias. "We removed the Biden mod on the same day as the Trump mod to avoid bias. But for some reason, YouTube bloggers are silent about it," he stated.
However, the situation escalated further when TheDarkOne revealed he had begun receiving death threats and derogatory insults following the removal of the mods. "Today we write death threats, call us pedophiles and all sorts of insults just because someone decided to stir up this topic," he added.
This isn't the first instance where mod removals on Nexus Mods have stirred controversy. In 2022, the platform removed a mod for Spider-Man Remastered that swapped out rainbow flags for American flags. At the time, the site's owners expressed their commitment to inclusivity and stated they would remove content that opposed diversity.
In response to the ongoing backlash, the owner of Nexus Mods concluded, "We're not going to waste our time on people who think this is cause for uproar."
