"Evil Dead: Game Removed from Stores 3 Years Post-Launch, Servers Stay Online"

The curtains have fallen on Evil Dead: The Game, as its publisher has initiated the process of delisting it from digital storefronts. This asymmetric multiplayer game, inspired by the iconic action horror franchise, debuted in 2022 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. IGN awarded it an 8/10 in their review, praising it as a "compelling and exhilarating" experience, though "rough around the edges" akin to the horror/comedies that inspired it.

Despite the release of a Game of the Year Edition a year later, the game struggled to maintain player engagement. The planned Nintendo Switch version was canceled in September 2023, and all further content development ceased. Now, three years post-launch, Evil Dead: The Game is no longer available for purchase, though its servers will remain active, allowing existing owners to continue their gameplay experience.

In a statement on the game’s Steam page, developer and publisher Saber Interactive announced the removal:

We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.

We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.

The decision has been met with disappointment from the community, evident in the numerous negative reviews on the game's Steam page, many of which mourn the game's effective demise. Despite this, Evil Dead: The Game holds a 'mixed' overall user review rating on Steam.

A recent positive review from a dedicated player with over 380 hours in the game encapsulates the sentiment: "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."

Saber Interactive, who also developed the successful Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 last year, is currently working on several other licensed movie games, including John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, and an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game. Additionally, Turok: Origins and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 are in the pipeline, showcasing the studio's continued commitment to delivering engaging gaming experiences.
