The Warhammer 40,000 community was rocked by the surprise announcement of the development of Space Marine 3, which came just six months after the release of Space Marine 2. Publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive made the announcement in mid-March, amidst ongoing concerns about the content pipeline for Space Marine 2 to retain player engagement.

In a recent blog post, both companies addressed these concerns directly, reassuring fans of their commitment to Space Marine 2. They stated, "Mid-March, we announced that Space Marine 3 had begun development and we’re excited to see your enthusiasm, although we hear those of you who fear for Space Marine 2 and its future support. So let us set the record straight: Space Marine 3 does not mean the end of Space Marine 2's development. Far from it. No teams are shifting over, no one is abandoning the game, and our plans to bring more awesome content to Space Marine 2 remain."

The companies outlined their roadmap for Space Marine 2, confirming that Patch 7 is scheduled for release in mid-April. Additionally, they teased exciting new content coming in the following months, including a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons. They hinted at further surprises, saying, "Trust us, there are surprises even dataminers haven’t found out about :)"

Space Marine 3 was described as a project in its early stages, with its announcement marking the beginning of a long-term endeavor. The developers expressed their gratitude for the community's enthusiasm, stating, "Many of you were very excited for this project and this makes us incredibly happy and motivated. Thank you for the unwavering support. That being said, we still have a lot to offer to the players with Space Marine 2."

The major announcement for Space Marine 2 includes the introduction of a new class, speculated by fans to be the Apothecary, which is the closest to a medic class among Space Marines, or possibly the Librarian, known for their warp-powered abilities. Additionally, the community is buzzing about a new melee weapon, with many hoping to see the axe featured in Secret Level’s Warhammer 40,000 animated episode, which modders have already brought into the game.

The decision to move forward with Space Marine 3 was influenced by the success of Space Marine 2. In an interview with IGN following Space Marine 2's launch, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits mentioned the potential for story DLC and hinted at ideas for Space Marine 3. He noted, "Our game director Dmitry Grigorenko, he has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel. Yes, yes, yes! There's so many different factions... there are other chapters, too, that are interesting..." This suggests that the narrative of Space Marine 2 sets the stage for a continuation in Space Marine 3, with IGN reporting on the likely enemy faction to be featured.
